Grilled Cheese Sandwich for French Onion Soup

December 27, 2011 by Kasy Allen

As mentioned in the French onion soup recipe I posted, our family prefers to serve a grilled cheese sandwich on the side of this soup so that it stays crispy, and the kids always find soups better with a side of grilled cheese.

Ingredients

8 slices Bread – Italian, French, whatever you like

1 tbsp Unsalted Butter – melted

2/3 cup Shredded Gruyere cheese

2/3 cup Shredded Fontina Cheese

Salt and Pepper

Recipe

  1. Divide cheeses amongst 4 slices of the bread, and season with salt and pepper.
  2. Top the sandwiches with another piece of bread.
  3. Spread the butter across the top pieces of bread and place the sandwich (butter side down) on nonstick skillet that should be heated on medium heat.
  4. While the bottom piece gets toasty, spread the butter on the top non-buttered piece.
  5. When the bottom gets toasty, flip and toast the other side – about 3-4 minutes per side should be perfect.

If you’re a newbie to grilled cheese, just remember that it’s done when the toast is golden brown and the cheese is melted.  Serve with a side of your favorite soup and enjoy!
